e-books for FE April 2021 newsletter

Welcome to the April 2021 issue of our e-books for FE newsletter. We hope you have been enjoying an Easter break in the brilliant sun and/or freezing snow and sleet, depending on where you are.

Usage of our e-books remained high again in March, with an increase of 20% over March 2020. With the exception of December, every month this academic year has seen over 100,000 user sessions, a figure which has never been reached previously. Thank you for your support of Jisc e-resources.

If you would like a demonstration of e-books, for library staff or teaching staff or both, contact your Account Manager to arrange a half-hour / 45-minute / one-hour session, whichever you feel suits your needs. If you have any related queries, e.g. how to make e-books discoverable via your Library Management System or VLE, or via reading lists, we will be happy to discuss this as well.

FE LRC Community of Practice

The CoP Leadership Team meeting via Zoom on 23 March covered a lot of ground, including the re-drafting of the aims and purposes and mission statement. The community Teams group has now been set up, and later this month we will distribute the link that will enable all FE LRC staff to join via an online registration form. This will be shared via the e-book and e-content Jiscmail lists and elsewhere, so keep your eyes out for those messages.

No identity provider? Try patron log-in!

If your college does not have an identity provider to enable authenticated access to e-books (e.g. OpenAthens or Shibboleth), or if you are transitioning between one method and a new implementation of another, and experiencing access problems, your students can still use our e-books for FE by using the patron log-in method.

This link shows the process from the student’s point of view:

And here is the admin view of LibCentral with the required actions for library staff:

As you can see from the above, it is a manual process in which library staff can assess the validity of the student access-requests, and approve them (or not), and set an expiry date on their access (if required), but it only needs to be done once per student: once the patron account is approved, they can log-in to Ebook Central to view e-books thereafter.

If you would like to know more, contact your Account Manager and ask for a chat to be arranged with Andrew Jackson.
